Reporting to the Manager, Distribution Grid Operations, the Power System Controller is responsible to operate the electrical distribution system to ensure a safe, reliable and cost-effective delivery of electrical power on a 24-hour basis. In performing this function, Power System Controllers monitor system conditions; develop, direct and dispatch system switching, work protection and trouble response for planned and emergency events. The position runs on a rotating 24/7, 365 days/year shift schedule. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, update, maintain and verify logs, reports and databases to record system attributes during planned and emergency conditions
  • Leads, distributes, follows up and checks work, answers inquiries and gives guidance as required
  • Liaise, consult and co-ordinate with contractors, internal and external customers
  • Operates the system to ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective distribution of electrical energy
  • Monitor system loading and initiate appropriate action to achieve desired system performance
  • Ensure proper isolation and work protection is provided for planned and emergency work
  • Direct and dispatch field operations to complete planned and emergency work
  • Schedule, plan and direct all switching operations to complete planned and emergency work
  • Recommend changes and upgrades to the system to improve system performance and safety
  • Maintains system maps, displays and schematics
  • Inform other departments of emergency response status
  • Support and assist field crews in response to emergencies such as outages, accidents and spills
  • Respond to after hour stakeout requests and initiate field response, if necessary
  • Advise management of significant events

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a 3 (three) year Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma
  • Relevant experience as a Power System Controller Journeyperson, MEARIE Journeyperson Electrical Operator Certificate or recognized equivalent; (A combination of relevant experience and education maybe considered) 
  • CET certification from OACETT preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of hydro overhead and underground systems, operating practices standards, equipment, materials and engineering records systems
  • Knowledge of Utility Work Protection Code and other utility safety regulations and practices
  • Demonstrated experience in a variety of business computer software packages
  • Familiar with computerized, remote automated switching system
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Safety performance and familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices
