Expected Salary Range: $56.09 - $69.59 Hourly 

The salary range shown above reflects the expected  compensation for this position. The final salary offered will be determined based on a holistic assessment of the candidate’s experience, education, training, and alignment with the role’s requirements. For positions covered by a collective agreement, placement within the range will follow the applicable step or classification.

 

The Power System Controller Apprentice is responsible for supporting the operation of the electrical distribution system to ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electrical power on a 24‑hour, 365‑day‑a‑year basis. In this role, the Apprentice monitors system conditions, develops and directs system switching, dispatches field crews, and administers work protection in accordance with the Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC). The Apprentice also assists in coordinating trouble response during emergency events under the guidance and direction of a Power System Controller. This position operates on a rotating 24/7/365 shift schedule.

This posting is to fill up to three (3) number of positions, at least one of which is an existing vacancy. Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in alignment with the applicable collective agreement, to finalize the number of positions filled.

 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creates, updates, maintains and verifies logs, reports and databases to record system conditions during planned and emergency conditions
  • Leads, distributes, follows up on and checks work; answers inquiries and gives guidance as required
  • Liaises, consults and co-ordinates with contractors; internal and external customers
  • Operates the system to ensure the safe, reliable and cost-effective distribution of electrical energy
  • Monitors system loading and initiates appropriate action to achieve desired system performance
  • Ensures proper isolation and work protection is provided for planned and emergency work
  • Directs and dispatches field operations to complete planned and emergency work
  • Schedules, plans and directs switching operations to complete planned and emergency work
  • Recommends changes and upgrades to the system to improve system performance and safety
  • Maintains system maps, displays and schematics
  • Informs other departments of emergency response status
  • Supports and assists field crews in response to emergencies such as outages, accidents and spills
  • Advises management of significant events


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with one of the following: Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma; Electromechanical Engineering Technology – Power and Control Diploma; Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree or Bachelor degree with a concentration on Energy Systems Engineering
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
  • Familiarity with utility safety regulations and work practices
  • Demonstrated experience in a variety of business computer software packages
  • Familiar with computerized, remote automated switching system
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Safety performance and familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices; adopts safe and efficient work practices, participates in job planning, risk reduction, and reports problems

This is an on-site position and requires candidates to come on-site. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
