WORK ILLUSTRATION:
We are seeking a knowledgeable and proactive disability management professional who will lead the administration and continuous enhancement of the company’s disability management program. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing occupational and non-occupational disability claims, coordinating return-to-work processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and organizational policies.
The role is accountable for overseeing injury and illness reporting, managing all interactions and correspondence with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), and facilitating early, safe, and sustainable return-to-work outcomes. The incumbent will monitor disability trends, support the organization’s experience rating objectives, and provide expert guidance on complex disability management matters.
Working closely with leaders, employees, healthcare providers, and external agencies, the successful candidate will assess the impact of legislative and regulatory changes, recommend appropriate actions, and implement solutions that minimize organizational risk and ensure compliance. In addition, the incumbent will collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop, champion, and execute health, wellness, and disability management initiatives that promote employee well-being, enhance workplace health outcomes, and support the achievement of organizational goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Functions as the primary contact for the WSIB program internally and to the WSIB.
- Verifies claims are being managed in accordance with the Workplace Safety and Insurance (WSI) Act and related policies are being adjudicated in both the best interest of the company and employee.
- Responsible for WSIB submissions, reliable data entry, consultation and training delivery.
- Reduces actual claim costs by ensuring all claims are submitted to WSIB and closed in a timely manner to assist in minimizing the annual premium paid to WSIB.
- Leads and implements organizational process in support of early and safe return to work for both occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Supports the organization’s disability management processes (occupational and non-occupational) to review medical documentation, liaising with medical professionals to understand employee medical conditions, restrictions and prognosis.
- Assists Leaders with Offers of Modified Work and return to work plans to support occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Provides oversight and reporting for all short-term and long-term disability cases (occupational and non-occupational) for the organization.
- Supports HR Business Partners and Health and Safety Consultants to execute employee return to work processes (as needed).
- Coordinates the Early and Safe Return to Work (ESRTW) Program to assist, guide and direct Leaders/ Employees/ Union/ Society in the Return to Work (RTW) process using best practices for disability management.
- Develops, enhances and prepares reporting to support disability management system for internal and external stakeholders to support decision-making and drive health services performance improvements.
- Monitors trends and makes recommendations to support management system and disability process improvements.
- Provides recommendations for the advancement of disability management system using best practices.
- Complies with and advises on applicable legislation.
- Acts as a subject matter expert to champion, lead, and execute health and wellness programs and initiatives in support of organizational strategies.
- Provides support to human resources and safety systems and processes in the provision and execution of pre-placement and health screening.
- Provides emergency first aid as required and supports organization in the provision of mental health counselling and/or post-incident response (as needed).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Degree or diploma in nursing (occupational health nursing preferred).
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in good standing with the College of Nurse of Ontario.
- Five (5) or more years of experience working in occupational health nursing.
- Certified in First Aid/ CPR and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Experience and knowledge of non-occupational disability and WSIB claims management
- Parklane Software System knowledge is considered an asset.
- Proficient in MS Office applications including Excel
- Ability to work with multiple stakeholders internal and external (MOL, WSIB, Committees).
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Extensive knowledge of WSIA, OH&S Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Human Rights and interaction of benefits programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of collective agreements (preferred).
- Extensive knowledge of WSIB policies and procedures and knowledge of payroll functions.
- Exceptional organization, time management, and prioritization skills; ability to work under stress and manage a high volume of work with competing deadlines.
- Ability to exercise professional diplomacy and maintain confidentiality of information and ability to relay proper information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to identify risks and different options for resolution within legislative requirements.
- Stakeholder management skills, along with strong engagement, communication, and ability to influence and negotiate.
- Customer service focused, ability to effectively interface with external and internal contacts.
- Superior assessment, analytical and problem-solving skills.

This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
