Reporting to the Manager of Stations & Distribution Automation, the Engineer will join a highly skilled engineering team, tasked with the upkeep and expansion of critical electrical infrastructure found in municipal transmission and distribution substations. Projects involve the installation, alteration, extension and/or repair of a variety of electrical equipment; controlled, monitored and/or automated by complex circuity, electronics, and advanced communication networks.
The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides both conceptual and detailed design services for substation capital and reactive maintenance projects. Co-ordinate projects, prepare cost estimates, manage project lifecycle, and collaborate with key stakeholders (internal & external), including: equipment suppliers, contractors, customers and other utilities.
- Performs engineering studies and/or calculations, including: short circuit analysis, load flows, arc flash hazard assessments, protective device coordination, equipment selection & sizing, protection relay settings, and ground grid design.
- Develops equipment RFP/ RFQ documents and testing/commissioning plans, witness and approve equipment FAT, SAT testing.
- Configures and program station control systems (SEL, GE etc.), protection relays, and distribution system network communications equipment.
- Prepares, provides guidance, or assists engineering staff with the creation or modification of single and three-line diagrams, AC/DC electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, electrical layout, and elevation drawings.
- Research, evaluate, test and recommends station equipment.
- Provides technical field support for operations staff.
- Develops standards and specifications.
- Plan and design processes, operational procedures, and safe work practices.
- Participates in short term and long-term strategic planning.
- Prepares engineering or business reports (both oral and written).
- Reviews, develops or presents business proposals.
- Participates on committees or project teams as required on a wide variety of business initiatives.
- Supports senior management on ad-hoc assignments.
- Mentoring and training designers and team members.
- Other miscellaneous duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred).
- Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
- 4+ years of relevant Engineering experience.
- Valid Class “G” Drivers License is required.
- Knowledge of protection and control concepts. Experience in the development of protection philosophies and the application of substation protection schemes.
- Proficiency in programming GE and SEL protection relays preferred.
- Familiarity with various substation equipment, including transformers, switches, switchgear, breakers, cables, AC/ DC auxiliary systems, and grounding systems.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTUs and data concentrators, station network topologies e.g. ethernet, serial, copper, fiber optic and wireless communication systems protocols & cyber security.
- Proficiency in system modeling using engineering analysis software such CYME, ETAP or SKM an asset.
- Knowledge of, and ability to look-up and correctly interpret relevant industry standards, including: CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE; relevant code, including: OESC, NESC, DSC, TSC, OBC, EUSR and UWPC; and relevant legislation, including: OHSA and Reg. 22/04.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through report writing and delivering presentations.
- Project management skills with the ability to organize the project, work with key stakeholders, manage project risks, and deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders, e.g., designers, contractors, suppliers, customers, HONI, various tradespersons, etc.
- Customer focused and demonstrates a proactive service orientation. Must be able to meet customer needs in a flexible but cost-effective manner.
- Acts as a safety leader by incorporating safety and environmental considerations into business decisions and actions.
- Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize possibilities and opportunities for change in support of continuous process improvement.
- Accepts work assignments with clear understanding of related quality, quantity, cost and performance targets/expectations.
- Adaptability to fast-paced environment and ability to pivot and react to changing priorities and demands.
This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
