Reporting to the Manager, Engineering – Maintenance Planning, the Engineer is accountable and legally responsible for personal drawings, calculations, documents and the work of others which the Engineer has signed. As an Engineer, the incumbent would provide a comprehensive range of engineering support services to ensure technical integrity, reliability, safety and cost-efficiency.

 

The incumbent would be responsible for all aspects of the development and management of maintenance plans for distribution and substation assets within Toronto Hydro’s system. This includes (and is not limited to) establishing and/or managing the requirements and frequency of inspection and maintenance activities, review and prioritization of deficiencies, close communication with program management and execution counterparts, budget proposals, and participating in medium and long-term planning activities. The incumbent would also be required to participate in regulatory or legislative activities to represent maintenance planning along with supporting asset condition assessment initiatives.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Leads short and long-range strategic planning for maintenance activities. Identifies, implements, and supports continuous improvement within maintenance processes.
  • Demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices.
  • Prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluations. Explores innovative technologies for inspecting and maintaining assets.
  • Develops strong working relationship with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis, and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution.
  • Performs trend analyses of equipment data and determines appropriate actions to improve and optimize capital and operations programs.
  • Undertakes and/or participates in special investigation and studies, and prepares reports with recommendations.
  • Able to work with large datasets effectively and prepares data analyses to drive engineering decisions efficiently.
  • Contributes to the preparation of material and/or technical specifications and standards; reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies.
  • Support the Ontario Energy Board rate filing process including the development of business cases, portfolio analysis and justification for different programs.
  • Participates in implementing corporate goals and objectives.
  • Represents Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees.
  • May be called upon to act as a team or project leader.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering. Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • 4+ years of Engineering experience, preferably in the Utilities industry
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Extensive experience in design, analysis, and planning—preferably in maintenance and reliability for utility assets.
  • Strong knowledge of business planning processes, including budgeting, proposals, approvals, and program planning.
  • Skilled in synthesizing complex information from multiple sources to drive continuous improvement and informed decision-making; experience with Alteryx and Tableau considered an asset.
  • Proficient in engineering technologies and systems such as CAD, SAP, GIS, engineering records, and specialized applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong negotiation and relationship-building capabilities.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in project management, budgeting, process optimization, and productivity improvements.
  • Highly self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence, and consistently identifies new opportunities.
  • Adaptable and resilient—able to manage change, challenge the status quo, and lead others through transformation.
  • Proven ability to build and lead cross-functional teams; promotes collaboration, innovation, and strategic risk-taking.
  • Solid understanding of safety and environmental regulations, with a commitment to compliance and safe operations.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to anticipate and assess emerging technological trends.

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs.  Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
