WORK ILLUSTRATION:

 

Reporting to the Manager, Non-Wires Solutions, the Engineer will provide a wide range of engineering and project management support with a focus of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost-effectiveness of such projects for the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. The Engineer is accountable and legally responsible for personal drawings documents and the work of others for which the Engineer has signed. The Engineer will assess use-cases for BESS projects, determine appropriate sites and support the procurement, design, and development BESS at Toronto Hydro, helping shape the future of Energy Storage at the utility. The Engineer will also support broader Non-Wires Solutions initiatives at Toronto Hydro.

 

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for delivering effective solutions for the seamless integration of BESS, advanced grids (microgrids), and emerging technologies into Toronto Hydro’s distribution system

  • Conduct research and analysis to help inform future BESS development, strategy and direction at Toronto Hydro
  • Provide technical support to BESS projects through design, construction, commissioning and operation
  • Facilitate technical discussions with internal and external stakeholders to resolve conflicts and reach desired
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders (HONI and IESO) to identify connection requirements for battery energy storage projects, and incorporate into design and testing phases
  • Develop sound and thoughtful technical scope of work documents
  • Work with external and internal stakeholders to monitor project progress (remotely and through frequent site visits as needed)
  • Review design and commissioning documents provided by contractors to ensure they meet Toronto Hydro’s requirements
  • Develop testing plans with contractor that meet Toronto Hydro’s safety requirements
  • Lead and witness on-site testing and work with contractors to troubleshoot, in a timely manner, any issues in the commissioning and operation phases
  • Provide training and operating/monitoring guidelines to Toronto Hydro’s controllers on relevant battery energy storage projects
  • Demonstrate effective project management by developing processes and documentation across various teams at Toronto Hydro to ensure projects are kept on-track, on-time and on-budget
  • Review proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigate application of new technologies
  • Compare alternatives and recommend optimal solutions based on cost/benefit considerations and engineering principles
  • Support analysis of revenue opportunities for BESS assets, including opportunities in the IESO markets
  • Participate in implementing corporate goals
     

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
  • 4+ years of Engineering experience. Strong consulting, design and planning experience preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective skills in project management operations, budgeting, business process and productivity improvements
  • Project Management experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with SCADA, protection and control, and communications systems
  • Knowledge of BESS technology, including lithium-ion, and other emerging technologies
  • Statistical and mathematical modelling knowledge
  • Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize possibilities and opportunities
  • Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change, willing to challenge the status quo
  • Demonstrated versatile leadership; encourage organizational teamwork, collaboration and educated risk taking
  • Innovative solutions and support the corporate goals
  • Fluent in the application of information technology, such as general office software, CAD, AM/FM, engineering specialized engineering application software
  • Strong negotiating/relationship building ability
  • Proven effective problem-solving and analytical ability

  • Ability to assess and understand technological trends and their effect on business or strategic work plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  • Knowledge of IESO energy and capacity markets, and the Ontario electricity system as a whole, is a plus

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs.  Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
