WORK ILLUSTRATION:

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Engineer provides a wide range of engineering support services that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System.  The Engineer is accountable and legally responsible for personal drawings, calculations, documents and the work of others for which the Engineer has signed. In addition to Substation Station Capital Planning, the Engineer in this role is integral in developing the annual Toronto Hydro Peak Demand Load Forecast that reflect among other things, the long-term impact of Climate Action Planning on the Toronto Hydro grid. They will utilize various planning and forecasting inputs from vehicle and transit electrification, Distributed Energy Resources, Demand Response initiatives as well as Grid Modernization to sequence infrastructure investments to prepare the Toronto Hydro grid for the future.    

 

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluations Participates in short- and long-range strategic planning 
  • Provides timely technical support and consultation for load forecasting, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices 
  • Accountable for the timely, technically accurate and cost-effective application of engineering practices
  • Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution 
  • Undertakes special investigation and studies, and prepares reports with recommendations.  
  • Prepares material and/or technical specifications and standards; reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies 
  • Performs analyses of reliability performance data involving stations, feeders and key accounts to determine causes and trends to support System Planning for the purpose of identifying mitigation measures 
  • Participates in implementing corporate goals
  • Represents Toronto Hydro in industry meetings and committees 
  • Supports interaction with key account customers 
  • May be called upon to act as a team or project leader 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering 
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario 
  • 4+ years of Engineering experience 
  • Electrical distribution system planning and/or design experience is preferred 
  • Project Management experience PMP certification preferred 
  • Knowledge and experience in Alteryx and Tableau are an asset 
  • Fluent in the application of information technology, such as general office software, CAD, AM/FM, engineering records, and specialized engineering application software 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Effective skills in project management operations, budgeting, business process and productivity improvements 
  • Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize possibilities and opportunities 
  • Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change, willing to challenge the status quo 
  • Proven effective problem-solving and analytical ability 
  • Proven conflict resolution skills 
  • Customer focused with strong interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to predict and understand technological trends and their effect on business or strategic work plans Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety and environmental legislation and regulations

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs.  Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
