WORK ILLUSTRATION:

 

As an Engineer, you provide a wide range of engineering support services that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Engineer is accountable and legally responsible for personal drawings, calculations, documents and the work of others for which the Engineer has signed.

 

The Incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of the development and management of maintenance plans for distribution and substation assets within Toronto Hydro’s system. This includes (but not limited to) establishing and/or managing the requirements and frequency of inspection and maintenance activities, review and prioritization of deficiencies, close communication with program management and execution counterparts, budget proposals, and participating in medium and long-term planning activities. The incumbent will also be required to participate in regulatory or legislative activities to represent maintenance planning along with supporting asset condition assessment initiatives.

 

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Participates in short- and long-range strategic planning for maintenance activities. Identifies, implements, and/or supports continuous improvement initiatives within the maintenance processes.
  • Provides timely technical support and consultation, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices.
  • Prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluations. Explores the use of technology in inspecting and maintaining distribution and substation assets.
  • Develops strong working relationship with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis, and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution.
  • Performs trend analyses of equipment data and determines appropriate actions to improve and optimize capital and operations programs.
  • Undertakes and/or participates in special investigation and studies, and prepares reports with recommendations.
  • Able to work with large datasets effectively and prepares data analyses to drive engineering decisions efficiently.
  • Supports the preparation of material and/or technical specifications and standards; reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies.
  • Participates in implementing corporate goals and objectives.
  • Represents Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees.
  • May be called upon to act as a team or project leader.
  • Performs root cause analyses of failure data.

                                        

 

REQUIREMENTS:     

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred)
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
  • 4-7 years of Engineering experience. Strong design, analysis, and planning experience, preferably with experience in planning maintenance activities for utility assets.
  • Experience/knowledge of engineering maintenance & reliability analysis.
  • Knowledgeable in business planning processes (proposals, budgeting, approvals, program planning)
  • Experience in Data Management and analysis, with applied experience in the use of Alteryx and Tableau.
  • Fluent in the application of information technology, such as general office software, CAD, SAP, GEAR, engineering records, and specialized engineering application software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective skills in project management operations, budgeting, process and productivity improvements.
  • Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize opportunities.
  • Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change, willing to challenge the status quo.
  • Demonstrated versatile leadership; encourage organizational teamwork, collaboration and educated risk taking to develop innovative solutions and support corporate goals and objectives.
  • Strong negotiating/relationship building ability.
  • Proven effective problem-solving and analytical ability.

  • Ability to predict and understand technological trends and their effect on business or strategic work plans.

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs.  Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
