As an Engineer, you provide a wide range of engineering support services that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System.  The Engineer develops standards and specifications; participates in short and long range strategic planning; prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies, and demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies.




  • Prepares material and/or technical specifications and standards; reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies
  • Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution
  • Approves equipment/material to be used in Toronto Hydro systems,  based on test reports/Drawings/Technical data/Quality records
  • Prepare technical training documents and actively contribute to Standard Practice and Standard Design Practice document creation/update
  • Acts as a change agent in adoption and continual use of standards across organization in design and construction stages
  • Prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluations
  • Provides timely technical support and consultation, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices
  • Represents Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees
  • May be called upon to act as a team or project leader                            




  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 7+ years of Engineering experience, preferably in the utilities industry
  • Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario
  • Must have a valid Class “G” Driver’s License
  • Solid understanding and knowledge of designs, standards and technical requirements related to distribution systems.
  • Solid understanding of grounding system design and testing for utility substations.  Fluent in the application and use of grounding design software.
  • Solid understanding of energy storage systems
  • Ability to undertake in-depth technical studies/analysis
  • Experience with use of pole loading analysis software is preferred
  • Fluent in the application of information technology, such as general office software, CADD, engineering records, and specialized engineering application software
