The Certified Power Cable Apprentice is responsible for the construction, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of the underground electrical and distribution systems. Working with all voltage types, the incumbent is expected to maintain and repair underground powerlines and cables, and other associated equipment, such as insulators, conductors, lightening arrestors, switches, metering systems, transformers and lighting and control systems. They are also expected to splice and terminate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks.
These duties will be performed to the level of applicable skills and knowledge of the incumbent, under the direction of a Certified Power Cable Person.
Note: Successful applicants may be rotated through the various work centres and departments to ensure familiarization with all aspects of Toronto Hydro’s distribution system.
The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates safe work practices and adheres to safety rules and regulations
- Communicates with customers and staff
- Engages in job planning with the Crew Leader and/or Manager and follows the plan
- Selects, operates and maintains tools and equipment
- Installs and maintains conductors and control wiring
- Troubleshoots, installs, and maintains underground distribution system
- Assists in connecting, applying, analyzing and fault locating equipment including testing and locating grounds on 600V system
- Installs, maintains and removes transformers on voltages up to 27.6kV
- Troubleshoots, installs, operates and maintains system protection, control and instrumentation equipment
- Handles energized lines using rubber protective equipment
- Handles energized lines using live line tool methods
- Provides adequate insulation while working on cables energized up to 750V
- Perform switching operations on secondary (up to 750v) and primary (up to 13.8kV) equipment
- Communicates with customers and staff
- Follows regulatory procedures and employer’s procedures
- Identifies defects, contraventions and dangers
- Applies discretion to solve occupational health and safety problems, and reports are unresolved problems
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum two (2) year college diploma or one (1) year Electrical Techniques Certificate with relevant demonstrated practical experience preferred or 309A Electrician (Red Seal) certification with a high school diploma and relevant experience
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License or higher in good standing with the ability to obtain DZ or ARZ post-hire
- Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
- Ability to read and interpret distribution system construction drawings and supporting documents
- Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority Regulation 22/04, Toronto Hydro and Utility Work Protection Code, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid and all other applicable legislation
- Demonstrated proficiency in a PC Windows environment and associated desktop software applications
